I am part of the \u010ciste\u0107i medvjedi\u0107i association primarily as a creative and performing den wheel. In practice, this means that I can most often be found in the field, whether in a forest full of garbage or in a classroom full of children. I enjoy working with people the most, especially leading creative and educational workshops through which we try to bring sustainability closer in a simple and real way that is applicable to everyone in practice. I joined the association five years ago as a volunteer, and for the last year and a half I have been employed there.<\/span><\/p>

I’ve been in the sustainability field in a professional sense ever since, and it all started quite spontaneously. Once you start noticing how much trash we leave behind, (especially if it’s left in the wrong places) it’s hard to ignore. For me, it quickly turned into a need to do something concrete, and through working with others and educating them, I hope I can leave at least a small mark, that little voice in their head that later reminds them to stop, think, and maybe make a different choice.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

One of the biggest challenges was finding a balance between enthusiasm and real capacity, especially in an environment where so much relies on volunteering, limited resources and a lot of invisible work. The feeling of doing a Sisyphean job sometimes comes in situations where we return to a location we have already cleaned and there is the same amount of trash as before. Or in locations where people have left so much trash that sadness can easily overwhelm us. In such situations, it is easy to take on too much and burn out, especially when you are doing something you really care about. In addition, it was challenging to build continuity in work and keep people motivated in a sector that often does not receive enough support or recognition.<\/span><\/p>

Those challenges taught me that some things just don’t happen overnight and that change requires patience and repetition. Through this, I gained a more realistic view of the pace at which things change, but also an additional motivation to persevere, even when the results are not immediately visible or involve a bit of Greek mythology.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Practicality and creativity help me the most, I try to solve problems immediately, on the ground, and not wait for the perfect moment. Collaboration with the team and volunteers is worth its weight in gold; together we figure out how to make clean-ups and various projects more efficient and fun, so obstacles often end up as opportunities for a new, fun idea.<\/span><\/p>

I also learned that you can learn something from everyone, even in the most unexpected places, so every challenge brings a small lesson and a tool for the next time. Planning actions, clear communication, and writing everything down help keep things from getting forgotten and results visible, even when it seems like we’re constantly pushing the same rock uphill.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

I cannot single out one project or initiative that I am most proud of, but I am especially glad that I was part of the Ecological Classroom project, an interactive program in which children learn about nature and environmental conservation through practical activities, where in addition to designing the project, I was also the person who implemented it. The project was financed by the Ministry of Education and I am glad that it was recognized as a valuable contribution to education. I am also very fond of the Ecological Library project, the concept of which I developed with a colleague, and then implemented it independently, and it was financed by the City of Zagreb, which further shows me that our ideas are recognized and appreciated. I am also proud of the author’s \u010cM play, which I am preparing with the help and advice of dear people.<\/span><\/p>

The association has received several awards through its work: the Yellow Frame in the “Sustainable Cities and Sustainable Communities” category from National Geographic Croatia and Adria Media Zagreb in 2021, the Green Butterfly from Resolution Earth for the “Throw Your Chewing Gum in the Bin” campaign in 2024, and some of our volunteers were nominated for the Volunteer Oscar. However, my greatest reward is all those moments when I hear from a child that they taught their parents not to throw gum on the floor, or when I get a hug at the end of a workshop. These are moments in which my happiness is immeasurable and which truly show me that what I do has meaning.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

I would advise anyone entering the sustainability sector not to wait for the perfect moment, but to start with what they can do right now. Even small actions have a significant impact, and experience is built through practice and constant learning. It is important to be willing to experiment, reflect, and adapt your approach to the situation and the people you are working with.<\/span><\/p>

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that change doesn’t happen overnight and that sometimes progress seems slow, but persistence and patience pay off. Also, never underestimate the importance of teamwork and working together, but also be open to learning from everyone, sometimes in the most unexpected situations. Ultimately, what you do has the most meaning when you see it impacting people and the environment, so always look for ways to channel your passion and creativity into real action.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
