Prompt questions:
I am the Vice Director at Mahony Group, where I oversee a range of commercial, industrial, and domestic electrical projects across Ireland. Over the years, I have built my experience in project management, client relationships, and delivering energy-efficient electrical solutions.
I have been involved in the green tech sector for several years through my work on sustainable electrical systems and technologies that help businesses and homes reduce energy use and improve efficiency.
What motivated me to join this sector was the chance to be part of something that has a real positive impact. I have always been interested in how innovation and technology can support a more sustainable future, and I wanted to work in an area where I could help organisations reduce waste, improve energy performance, and make greener choices
Describe the major obstacles in the role model’s career.
Prompt questions:
I have faced a number of challenges throughout my career, both professionally and personally. One of the biggest challenges was building credibility and confidence in what has traditionally been a male-dominated industry. At times, I felt that I had to work harder to prove my knowledge, leadership skills, and ability to manage projects successfully.
Another challenge was balancing the demands of a growing career with personal responsibilities. The electrical and construction sectors can involve long hours, tight deadlines, and a lot of pressure, so finding the right balance was not always easy.
These challenges definitely pushed me to become more resilient and determined. They helped me develop stronger leadership skills, better communication, and greater confidence in my own abilities. While there were difficult moments, they also encouraged me to keep progressing and to take on more responsibility throughout my career
Explain how challenges were overcome.
Prompt questions:
To overcome these challenges, I focused on building resilience and continuously improving my skills. I made a point of staying up-to-date with the latest technologies and sustainable practices in the electrical and green tech sectors, which helped me build credibility and confidence.
I also leaned heavily on mentoring and networking. I was fortunate to have mentors who offered guidance, shared their experiences, and provided practical advice on navigating the industry. Being part of professional networks and industry groups allowed me to connect with peers, exchange knowledge, and gain support when facing difficult situations.
Finally, I worked on developing strong communication and leadership skills. By learning to advocate for myself, manage teams effectively, and approach problems strategically, I was able to turn obstacles into opportunities for growth and strengthen my career path
Highlight key successes and contributions.
Prompt questions:
One of the projects I’m most proud of is the installation of a new vrf firecell wireless fire detection system at the former Ferry Terminal Building in Dun Laoghaire. This project was a great example of integrating advanced, sustainable technology into an existing structure. The wireless system reduced the need for invasive cabling and minimized material waste, while improving safety and energy efficiency.
I’ve also been recognised within the company for my leadership in promoting sustainable practices and integrating green technologies into everyday projects. While formal awards are always welcome, the real success comes from seeing clients and colleagues adopt greener solutions as a result of our work.
My contributions to sustainability and green tech innovation are centred on making energy-efficient and smart systems practical and accessible. Projects like the Ferry Terminal installation demonstrate how modern technology can reduce environmental impact while enhancing safety and performance
I’ve also learned the importance of building a strong network and seeking out mentors. Having people you can turn to for advice, support, and guidance can make a huge difference, especially in a field that is still growing and changing rapidly.
Finally, be patient and persistent. Change in energy and sustainability doesn’t happen overnight, but every small innovation or improvement contributes to a greener future. If you stay committed, proactive, and open to collaboration, you can make a real impact both in your career and for the environment
