I work at Sekem Energy GmbH in project management for climate and energy model regions as well as climate change adaptation regions in the Upper Liebochtal. In addition, I support energy communities and other projects in the field of renewable energy technologies and also work as an assistant to the management.
One of the biggest challenges for me was acquiring this then-new and very extensive body of knowledge. It was important to both maintain an overview and develop in-depth expertise. At the same time, I was initially unsure whether I wanted to work more as a technician or in a more interdisciplinary, connecting role.
Through my experience in various areas such as science, engineering offices, and universities of applied sciences, I realized that I feel more comfortable in an interface role. This helped me find my place professionally and better utilize my potential. To this day, I find the most fulfillment in project management, where I deal with a wide variety of topics and people.
I have not experienced concrete external obstacles such as discrimination or similar barriers so far. Sometimes I tend to stand in my own way, but I am continuously working on that. Mentoring programs, for example, help me strengthen my self-confidence.
It is also very important to me to stay interested in new technologies and innovative solutions. This is a key foundation for developing further in this field. In the future, I would also like to continue my professional education once my children are older and I have more time again.
One project I am particularly proud of is the “Klimaschulen” (Climate Schools) project, where I took on project leadership. In this project, I support schools in the region. This is especially important to me because children and young people are strong multipliers and pass on topics like energy saving to their families.
During my time at the company, we have also received several awards as a team, such as the GreenBrand Award and a klima:aktiv award.
Another important contribution of our work is that we were able to promote the expansion of photovoltaic systems and the transition from oil to biomass heating in five municipalities in the Graz-Umgebung district.
I think it is important to always stay informed about current developments in the green tech industry. It is just as important to ask questions and know who to turn to.
An important realization for me is to be aware of your own core competencies and continue to develop them. The broader the foundation you stand on, the more secure you are in the job market.
For example, I once received feedback in a job interview that I lacked technical knowledge. I then immediately pursued the appropriate training. Experiences like this can be very helpful if you are willing to learn from them and continue developing.
