Hola, mi nombre es la Dra. Agnieszka Paszuk y soy f\u00edsica y jefa de un grupo de investigaci\u00f3n junior en la Universidad Tecnol\u00f3gica de Ilmenau, en Alemania.<\/span><\/p>

Complet\u00e9 mi m\u00e1ster en microsistemas, electr\u00f3nica y optoelectr\u00f3nica en una universidad t\u00e9cnica en Polonia y luego me mud\u00e9 a Alemania para ocupar un puesto de investigaci\u00f3n doctoral. Durante mi doctorado, tuve la suerte de unirme a un grupo centrado en comprender c\u00f3mo los materiales relevantes para aplicaciones fotovoltaicas pueden prepararse y controlarse a nivel at\u00f3mico, especialmente en superficies e interfaces.<\/span><\/p>

\u00bfPodr\u00eda hablarnos un poco sobre los desaf\u00edos que puede enfrentar en esta trayectoria profesional?<\/span><\/i><\/p>

Un desaf\u00edo en este campo es trabajar en la intersecci\u00f3n de m\u00faltiples disciplinas. Es necesario combinar la f\u00edsica, la qu\u00edmica y la ingenier\u00eda, lo que requiere un aprendizaje y una adaptaci\u00f3n constantes. Al mismo tiempo, esto tambi\u00e9n es emocionante, ya que me brinda oportunidades para aprender nuevas t\u00e9cnicas y m\u00e9todos.<\/span><\/p>

Uno de los mayores retos es construir un perfil de investigaci\u00f3n independiente. Establecer tu propio grupo, conseguir financiaci\u00f3n y convertir ideas en proyectos exitosos es altamente competitivo y lleva tiempo. La investigaci\u00f3n en s\u00ed misma tambi\u00e9n es muy desafiante, especialmente en un campo tan competitivo, donde muchos expertos experimentados lideran grupos grandes y bien consolidados.<\/span><\/p>

A menudo los experimentos no funcionan como se espera y el progreso puede ser lento. Esto requiere persistencia y resiliencia.<\/span><\/p>

Para m\u00ed personalmente, equilibrar el trabajo cient\u00edfico, las responsabilidades de liderazgo (incluidas las tareas administrativas) y la vida personal puede ser exigente. Tengo dos hijos peque\u00f1os, as\u00ed que ya no puedo trabajar hasta tarde por la noche ni los fines de semana. Adem\u00e1s, a veces se enferman, lo que puede ser estresante, especialmente cuando hay plazos que simplemente deben cumplirse.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

Eso suena dif\u00edcil; \u00bfqu\u00e9 acciones, estrategias o habilidades te ayudaron a superar los obst\u00e1culos? \u00bfHubo mentores, herramientas o redes que te ayudaron?<\/span><\/i><\/p>

Veo la colaboraci\u00f3n como una estrategia clave. En lugar de ver la ciencia como una competencia, trabajar juntos ayuda a abordar los desaf\u00edos interdisciplinarios de manera m\u00e1s eficaz.<\/span><\/p>

Otra habilidad importante es establecer prioridades y delegar tareas, algo que todav\u00eda estoy aprendiendo y mejorando continuamente.<\/span><\/p>

Aprender de cient\u00edficos experimentados puede ayudar a superar tanto los desaf\u00edos cient\u00edficos como los relacionados con la carrera profesional. Me siento muy afortunado de contar con un fuerte apoyo por parte de mi profesor supervisor y otros colegas s\u00e9nior. Su apoyo, incluido el acceso a sus laboratorios, ha marcado una gran diferencia y me ha permitido dirigir mi propio grupo.<\/span><\/p>

Finalmente, la persistencia es fundamental. Aceptar que el fracaso forma parte del proceso y aprender de \u00e9l es lo que impulsa el progreso. Al mismo tiempo, he aprendido que no pasa nada por no rendir al 110% todos los d\u00edas.<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

\u00bfDe qu\u00e9 proyectos o iniciativas est\u00e1s m\u00e1s orgulloso?<\/span><\/i><\/p>

Estoy particularmente orgulloso de formar en los proyectos en los que estoy trabajando actualmente, que se centran en materiales semiconductores para la divisi\u00f3n fotoelectroqu\u00edmica del agua. Todav\u00eda hay mucho margen de mejora en este campo y es emocionante contribuir a ello. Tenemos muchas ideas prometedoras y estoy deseando ver hasta d\u00f3nde podemos llevarlas.<\/span><\/p>

Agnieszka Paszuk Professional Background Hi Agnieszka, could you introduce yourself and briefly describe your professional journey? Hi, my name is Dr. Agnieszka Paszuk, and I am a physicist and Junior Research Group Leader at Technische Universit\u00e4t Ilmenau in Germany. I completed my master\u2019s degree in microsystems, electronics, and optoelectronics at a technical university in Poland, and then moved to Germany for a doctoral research position. During my PhD, I was fortunate to join a group focused on understanding how materials relevant for photovoltaic applications can be prepared and controlled at the atomic level, especially at surfaces and interfaces. Today, I lead my own research group, and my work has shifted more toward sustainable photoelectrochemical systems for renewable energy conversion, including clean hydrogen production. Challenges Faced Could you tell us a little bit about any challenges you can face in this career path? One challenge in this field is working at the intersection of multiple disciplines. You need to combine physics, chemistry, and engineering, which requires constant learning and adaptation. At the same time, this is also exciting, as it gives me opportunities to learn new techniques and methods. One of the biggest challenges is building an independent research profile. Establishing your own group, securing funding, and turning ideas into successful projects is highly competitive and takes time. Research itself is also very challenging, especially in such a competitive field, where many experienced experts lead large, well-established groups. Experiments often do not work as expected, and progress can be slow. This requires persistence and resilience. For me personally, balancing scientific work, leadership responsibilities (including administrative tasks), and personal life can be demanding. I have two small children, so I cannot work late evenings or weekends anymore. They also get sick sometimes, which can be stressful, especially when there are deadlines that simply have to be met. Strategies & Solutions That sounds challenging, what actions, strategies, or skills helped you overcome obstacles? Were there mentors, tools, or networks that helped? I see collaboration as a key strategy. Instead of viewing science as competition, working together helps tackle interdisciplinary challenges more effectively. Another important skill is setting priorities and delegating tasks, something I am still learning and continuously improving. Learning from experienced scientists can help to navigate both scientific and career-related challenges. I feel very lucky to have strong support from my supervising professor and other senior colleagues. Their support, including access to their laboratories, has made a big difference and enabled me to run my own group. Finally, persistence is crucial. Accepting that failure is part of the process, and learning from it, is what drives progress. At the same time, I have learned that it is okay not to perform at 110% every single day. Achievements & Impact Which projects or initiatives are you most proud of? I am particularly proud to be part of the projects I am currently working on, which focus on semiconductor materials for photoelectrochemical water splitting. There is still a lot of room for improvement in this field, and it is exciting to contribute to that. We have many promising ideas, and I am looking forward to seeing how far we can take them. Another important aspect of my work is training young scientists. Supporting the next generation of researchers who will contribute to solving global sustainability challenges is something I value deeply. Advice & Takeaways What advice would you give to someone entering the green tech industry?Build a strong foundation in science, whether in physics, chemistry, or materials science, but do not stay within one discipline. Most importantly, do not be discouraged by challenges. Progress in science takes time, and persistence is key. Also, build networks and collaborate, science is not something you do alone. Finally, remember that fundamental research can have real-world impact.
